Advantages of 3-Stage Air-Cooled Starting-Air Compressors
Why three is better than two and air beats water
Our Passat and Levante 3-stage air-cooled compressors are the standard-setters in commercial shipping. All major shipyards and ship owners have long used Passat compressors as their standard equipment. Now our Levante compressors have set an even higher benchmark. So what advantages do 3-stage air-cooled compressors have over 2-stage water-cooled models?
Less Temperature
As air is heated up during compression, the final temperature depends on the compression ratio in each compression stage. By dividing the total compression ratio by three, you get lower compression temperatures in the cylinders and valves than with 2-stage water-cooled compressors. That makes more efficient air cooling possible.
Less Maintenance Cost
Lower compression temperatures prolong the service life of valves to as much as 4,000 hours because there is no thermal cracking of the lubricating oil. This lowers maintenance costs, as do the longer maintenance intervals that mean less manpower is required. What’s more, standard SAE30 oil can be used in Sauer 3-stage air-cooled compressors, just as in standard 2- and 4-stroke diesel engines.
Less Installation Cost
Since 3-stage air-cooled compressors have no cooling water system, you automatically have a more reliable and less costly solution than with 2-stage water-cooled compressors. Our 3-stage air-cooled models are easier to monitor and control, require lighter, less expensive foundations, and need no additional ventilation arrangements. Available from 60–460 m³/h and a final pressure of up to 45 barg, these Sauer compressors are suitable for reliable and safe 24/7 operations at an ambient temperature of up to 60°C. With more than 30,000 units sold since 1970 we have ample proof of their successful operation.
